Answer Engine Optimization: getting cited by AI assistants
Ranking is no longer the only distribution channel. Here is what determines whether an AI assistant recommends your business.

Why answer engines behave differently from search engines
Search engines return a list of documents and let the user choose. Answer engines synthesise a response and choose on the user's behalf, citing a small number of sources. That shifts the objective from being one of ten acceptable results to being one of two or three trusted ones.
The practical consequence is that clarity and verifiability matter more than keyword coverage. A model must be able to extract an unambiguous statement about what your business does, who it serves and where, and corroborate it elsewhere.
Entity clarity comes before content volume
Consistent naming, structured data, matching details across directories and profiles, and an unambiguous description of your services do more for AI visibility than another twenty blog posts. Ambiguity is the single biggest reason businesses are omitted from generated answers.
Start by making one canonical description of the business and enforcing it everywhere, then express the same facts in structured data so machines do not have to infer them.
Write content that can be quoted
Answer-engine-friendly content leads with the answer, then supports it. Direct question headings, short definitive opening statements, specific numbers and clear scoping give models extractable passages.
Comparison pages, pricing explanations and process breakdowns are disproportionately cited because they answer decision-stage questions that generic thought leadership does not.
Measure what you can, accept what you cannot
You cannot rank-track an answer engine reliably. What you can do is monitor branded query volume, referral traffic from assistant surfaces, and periodic prompt testing against your category to see whether you appear and how you are described.
Treat AEO as a compounding authority programme rather than a switch. The work that earns citations also improves conventional search performance.
